This ceramic urn features a flowing floral-like pattern that is reminiscent of abundant vines that can grow at the edge of fields and woods. This urn was conceived during the winter when vines were heavily laden with snow.
The subtle clear glaze brings out the beauty of the white porcelain. This is one of my most difficult forms to make on the potter's wheel. After the urn is thrown at the wheel, the form is altered by carving into the rim and foot to create the three footed bottom and organic flowing rim. Once the urn has dried, many hours go into creating the floral raised relief imagery: first drawing the pattern with a pencil, then brushing wax over that pattern. When the wax risist dries the surrounding porcelain gets sponged away. The wax resist floral design becomes the raised relief design. It is then fired once in the kiln, where the wax burns off. Then the piece is glazed and fired it for another 15 hours in the kiln.
